I found a fresh intact (except for blood dripping from its broken neck) crow last night and layered it deep in borax in a cardboard box as a first step. It was already smelling since it had been in the sun. I added fresh herbs from my garden to offset that. Now what? I'd like to preserve as much as I can of the crow in the least invasive way. Is there some way to just dry it without cutting it open? Does keeping the box in the sun hasten the drying process or just make it smell worse? Thanks for your help.

The bird is rotting and nature is assuming control. You preserve a crow in borax all right, but JUST THE SKIN. Soft tissue and viscera rot quickly and once the process begins, it cannot be reversed. Next time, try freezing it until you get some more info.
Watch out for "found" dead crows! Crows are very well known carriers of West Nile Virus. Sounds like what you've found has already "gone" too far to be of any use anyhow. Plus the fact that crows are now federally protected and have actual seasons in which you can harvest or have in possesion. As far as I know Georgia is the the only state without any regulations. I may be wrong? As for other states, I'm not sure. It would be in your best interst to check your possesion laws before taking possesion of any wild animal!
Bury that crow and fertilize those fresh herbs!
allows you to shoot crows any time of the year if you can prove that it was depredating crops at that time. If the crows become a nuisance they can be shot. But you must supply the proof that they did.
Watch the skin of a crow for mites little tiny things you can't see but you can feel them crawl up your arm.Sprinkle borax all around crow and over it working it into the outer skin, this will kill the mites...Lloyd
