Tannery

This response submitted by Len on 6/23/02. ( lengums@powercom.net ) 216.114.21.118

Hi Travis, You have the right idea in sending the fox to the tannery until you learn how to tan. Fox do slip a lot easier. Practice on the deer hides until you have become proficient at tanning and learn the process. I would recommend Rittel's Tanning Supplies as the products he has developed work very well.
As stated above, but in different words, you can find a lot of good info in the archives which will also help you. Good luck.

Way to go Len

Love to see civil answers to questions from our youth or beginners. Yours is the type of response that will keep them interested in taxidermy instead of turning them off or leading them to believe we are still a bunch of creeps living in the dark ages - as protrayed in those disney flicks.

Len, you are a fine example of a great taxidermist.

Way to go, Bob.

You don't do too bad a response your self!
I've been following this young 'uns posts every since he has started on
this site. What I have seen is a fourteen year old that has been
trying to sell pigeons to make money for supplies, a fourteen year old
that has offered to sweep floors in his area in turn for an opportunity
to learn, a fourteen year old that has not backed down from a heckler or
a sceptic, and a fourteen year old that I am starting to take seriously.

I have not yet seen him ask for a "gimme", he has offered something in
turn for each of his requests. He has been known to thank his respondents.

Personally, I'm starting to kinda like and admire the kid.
Glen

my 2 cents..

This response submitted by Ed on 6/23/02. ( nuisancetrap4u@aol.com ) 64.12.96.70

I have to agree with Glen, this kid (young man) is determined! You don't find that in most of today's youth. Everything is too fast pace and so on! I recently read an article about how hunting for example is fading, all from the lack of teenagers keeping interst in it due to the slow pace! Television and video games are fine in moderation, but today's youth are loosing touch with what I consider traditional values!

We were all 14 at one time and were filled with thousands ofd anxious questions! Now thanks to this high tech world we are living in Travis can type away with all the questions his mind can produce! Sure "it's in the archives", but that's just a lazy mans cop out! Why not give individual guidance! Those few on this board whose time is so precious , sure do spend an awfull lot of time here? Guess they aren't as busy as they would have you believe!

I can think back to when taxidermy first started itching in my brain, all I had was an ad in the back of a Outdoor Life magazine and an address to send away for a catalog. What I would have given to have all of the resources that are out there today! We've come a long way!

Alright I'm off my soap box now, but I think we should remember to encourage not discourage!

Keep up that drive and determination Travis and you will succeed, regardless of what you attempt!

Ed

You Guys not been around much! On The Chat!

This response submitted by Kiwi on 6/23/02. ( ) 203.96.111.202

Hey Guys I some What agree With (sick of your Fox ) there have been in the last few days master taxidermist telling travis what he should do with his fox, some thease taxidermist like rick wilson ,RobinK, superpig and a few other even my self have helped him , It was Rick that told him to do the above with his fox, this happens alot on the chat with the new learners we dont mind telling them what to do but, Hey when you spend 15- 20 mintues typing a response then they either ask the next one all over again and you have to sit threw that! yes they are intiled to a 2nd advice by all means but sometimes you say to yourself Well why the hell did i bother to tell him especil when they get the same reply from the other guy as you already told them what to do!
Hell I will help anybody anytime but it gets a bit on the nose when your in the chat and all you see is the same question coming from them, then if you dont answer it they get p$$s with you.
A lot Of Us Taxidermist dident have the resorce's they have today to get into taxidermy we got there by experiment with things.
but unfortinly todays child Has been Taugth to sit on his or her Butt and the world will come to you and show you it All ...
Travis I like your determination and keep it up! but just take on boad what you are told and you will learn it all there are some very helpful top taxidermist here to help you and others.
Its good to see you doing something constructive with your life and not into the video games and drugs etc like you said! keep it up young fellow and you will injoy the outdoors .

see you on the chat

Kiwi, the big difference

This response submitted by BobB on 6/23/02. ( foxranch@hotmail.com ) 216.165.131.153

between the boards and the chat is the replies. In the forums, someone can type out a nice response and the person asking can even print it out for future guidance.

No way in the chat. When the room is crowded, the reponses go by so fast you can not keep up, especially when you are trying to type a thank you or another question to clarify.

Bang, you look up and the answer is already gone and you missed it.

Maybe the chat has changed. I just can't find the time to get there like years ago. Maybe the chat is just not the place to give or recieve specific instructions, especially during peak hours when the room is full and crazy with 5-6 different discussions taking place.

Again unless the chat has changed, it was not always the place for youngsters to be anyhow.

Just my worthless two-cents worth.

Forum Questions

This response submitted by Stew on 6/24/02. ( Bakerview3@aol.com ) 198.81.26.74

I think that this is the place for questions. That being said, the archives are a great place to start. Putting in ones time by searching for answers, investing in educational resources like books, manuals, videos, and magazines like Breakthrough are invaluable. BUT there is a place for asking a quick question here on the forum. Heck, by printin off several from past posts, theres a book right there. But if you've seen the question before and find yourself shaking your head, than just move on and DON'T RESPOND. There is always going to be a few folks asking (for some of you) what seem like redundant questions. If you need to suggest the archives at least do it in a civil manner.

Chat room

This response submitted by Superpig on 6/24/02. ( millstaxidermy@aol.com ) 205.188.208.134

I am a regular in the chatroom like Kiwi is and also like Travis. I am sorry to disagree with some of you here. The chatroom is a great place to ask questions. First of all you have several great taxidermists in there, so you get many answers to do things in more than one way. Next you get your reply right away. And if the chat gets too crowded, well we do use our whisper buttons and it works wonders. Had several beginners talking back and forth to me through the whisper button. It's almost like talking on the phone. If the other person doesn't quite understand what you mean you can explain it a lot better than going back and forth in the forum for days to come. Travis is a great kid and I enjoy talking to him but he does ask the same questions over and over. And it is understandable that that is getting on the nerves of others who do take the time to answer his questions extensively, just to see the same question posted the next day on the forum. If he can't remember the answer, he can write the stuff down as we tell him on the chat. I did this before and it works. Almost like the seminars we have on the weekends every now and then. Not any different.

Check the archives is not the lazy mans way out.

This response submitted by John C on 6/25/02. ( ) 64.216.172.43

Research is the key to learning. There are so many ways to do just one thing. When you look through the archives you simply further your education.

What I great reference tool the archives is.

Look several times a question has just been answered within the last few days. to tell someone to search a little is not to much to ask.

I search throught them myself at times.

You can even use www.google.com to search through them I know I have done just that.

I do spend a good portion of time answering e-mails daily to many who ask certain questions. Many of those questions have other questions to lead them in. It makes it easier for the person with a problem to understand the answer if the have somewhat of a knowledge about the problems.

I met Leonard Gums a few years ago, he was a very nice person, has a ton of tact. I have not seen his work since then but am sure like the rest off us it is a lot better because of the sharing of knowledge. What we do with the knowledge is up to us.
