Elk cape preperation?

Submitted by Sean Diaz on 6/24/02. ( mrseandiaz@hotmail.com ) 208.255.216.230

I just drew on a trophy bull hunt in Idaho and I need to become educated
on cape preperation. Basically I need to know how much of the cape that I
need to save and how to care for it. Also, how long can you actually
keep the skin on the skull and it still be good? I just need to know
how to not ruin everything before I get it to my taxidermist. Thankyou

Sean,

(Good name by the way) My suggestion is to find a taxidermist that you want to mount the animal for you, and ask him/her how they would like it prepared once they have agreed to handle the task. Get references, ask friends, visit their shop if possible etc. so you will be confident to get the quality of work you desire.

Good luck on that Banchey!

Sean

Troy is one heck of a good taxidermist, very meticualis in his work. A true artist and perfectionist. I beleive Troy will do the work just like it was for himself. Sorry I dont have his phone number.

Seldom have I visited a shop that is this clean and never have I seen one this organized. In Troy's studio everything has its place and everything is in its place, no if's and's or but's about it. I think you will be very pleased with Troy's work.

If you are hunting with an outfitter, they usually have a crew member who is experienced at caping out the head and preparing the antlers and hide so that they wont spoil.

Cut it in half in between the front legs and back legs and then get it to a taxidemist as fast as you can.the sooner the better
