You can take a hand grider and shave the wet cape with the cape flat on a table and the grinder with the guard off and a metal disk, this will help a lot. You just grind off a fine layer of leather, be carefull.

First let me say that I am very new to this and have only done one deer under supervision of a taxidermist/friend. I ran into the same problem, it would come together behind the ears and at the brisket but seemed about 3-4 inches short of coming together in the mid neck region. First, we took a fish skinning knife, the curved, dull, serrated kind, and scraped firmly side to side in that area. I couldn't believe the difference, gained about 1 1/2 inches that way. Put the cape back on the form and placed a large rasp between the cape and form. The rasp "grabbed" the cape and provided the leverage to pull and pry to get the needed 2 inches in that area. Worked like a charm! Oh, the cape was dry tanned, rehydrated, and sweated. Good luck!
