Goat Horns

Submitted by scott lane on 07/12/2002. ( scottlane86@hotmail.com ) 203.55.173.3

I have recentley been hunting and as a 15year old shot my first goat.
Its horns are by no means record breakers but i would like to preserve them because they are my first.
I have the skull and horns but i would like to know what would be the best way for my to remove all the flesh and other meaty bits. I know that im supposed to boil pig jaws to do this but im not sure if i can do the same with thes horns....
Could anybody give me any advice?

Bag them

Scott the best way is to bag them for about 2 weeks in these warm weather. Take them out and hit the horns with a rubber malllet or take your hands and you should be able to twist them and pull them right off. Then you wash the head and horns out. Do this outside or the lady of the house may get real upset. Let them air dry then you can epoxy the horns back on.

Boiling rams horns is not recomeded.

OK

i was looking at keeping the horns attached to a small square of skull to keep them joined, so i dont really want to pull the horns off unless absolutely neccesary

is what you'll be if you don't remove them and clean every thing thouroughly. There is meat and tissue in there that will rot and stink to high heaven !

Scott, it is necessary

The horns need to be removed from the "cores" and cleaned out. The cores are part of the top of the skull and they go up inside the horns. There's some tissue in there that must be removed. Once it's all cleaned out, you re-attatch the horns to the cores and proceed with mounting. If you use the search feature here on this site you'll find alot of info about this. It will probably make this clearer to you than I just did! Good luck.

why not skull mount

this is probably too late, but i have acouple of "european" skull mounts of goats and they are beautiful. why cut the skullplate when you can skull mount the horns. remove the horns as indicated above, then boil the skull in lysol water to loosen meat. scrape clean.dont forget to clean out the brain cavity. whiten in peroxide.rinse thoroughly. reattach horns to pedicals.
