a person i know has six ducks in his freezer. he wants to give them to me to mount and keep for my personal collection. my question is do i need any special paperwork to take these in as my own? i know i would if i was mounting them for someone else.

You only need a migratory bird license if you do birds for other people.

If the birds are to be used by you for whatever reason, they can be "gifted" to you by the hunter. There must be a written document showing who took the birds and when to establish origin. The document needs to accompany the birds.......(For what reaon, God knows.) Once they are in your possession you can do what you will with them. The may not be traded, or sold after you mount them.
