I have posted a couple of questions about hair slippage, I appreciate the responses.
Just to recap, I used lysol in my rehydration bath, before pickling, and I have hair slippage. I pulled one of the capes out of the bath and rolled it up and froze it. The other cape that was in the bath, I pickled but when I tried to shave the cape, I had major slippage left on the beam.
I am going to try the frozen cape. I am thinking of pickling the cape but not "SHAVING" it until after it is tanned. I am thinking this because I went ahead and tanned the slipped cape and the hair has locked in.
Is it ok to not shave during the pickle and wait for after tanning?.
Any other suggestions to save the cape?

Try some other teqnique maybe a good spray preservative. Its easy ive never had a problem Rough flesh, sodium sulfate atleast 4 hrs, wash a couple of times with kem 4, tumble, flesh-turn eyes etc., spray with preservative and mount its that easy. Why pickle a deer hide?
Spray preservative? Whew. I ain't touching it. David, you certainly haven't read the archives. Lysol is part of your problem and how you ended up using it in the first place puzzles me. Flesh, salt, pickle, shave, tan, wash, mount. There are obviously a few little things omitted in that cycle, but they are the basis of all quality taxidermy work. I shave after it's tanned also if I need some more stretch or to highlight muscle definition.
I know it's a bit unorthodox, but if you aren't losing gobs of hair you might try drying the cape again. I've done 'em when they were a bit "iffy" and had a lot of loose hairs (not loosing in bunches). Sodium Sulfate sets hair really well and has saved a couple for me. Cover the flesh side and roll up, place in frig overnight... I like to leave on for at least 20 hours when this happens. Then soak in cold water and BACTERICIDE until relaxed. Tan as usual. You might consider Ben Mears Spray "Tan" on a loose cape, mount, then leave alone until firm! Be gentle.
what was the condition of your cape before the process was it slipping hair then or is it something in the process thats making it slip? here my process for tanning from dry salted cape. rehydrate cape in solution 1 pound of salt to gallon of water for deer let soak approx. 30 minutes, then put in pickle 1.5 pounds of salt and 1 ounce formic acid to gallon of water ph= 2.0-3.0, let soak in pickle approx. 2 days then wash, cap of kemal-4, 2caps lysol and golfball size of relaxo. Then shave cape, then buff cape in 4.5 ph solution for 30 minutes, then spin water out in wash machine, apply warm liqua-tan to cape including nose, eyes, ears, let sit approx. 1 hour, then tumble in sawdust approx. 10 minutes then you can mount cape immediately or freeze it for a later date. have had great results with this process good luck.. I think the lysol in your rehydration is not a good idea, ph too high. the pickle will kill any bacteria!
I got the idea of lysol from Sallie Dahmes Whitetail Manual. I called them after the problem and they told me that that was outdated info. Nice time to find that out. haha
