tanning fish

i am thinking of preserving the fish skin with a 50 /50 mix of denatured alcohol and water - how much borax do i need to add? - is this a good idea? - i have been using borax water and lysol and have been having goo luck - i thot the alcohol would set anything a missed on the head of bass

But using these is NOT the answer to leaving flesh inside the head. All flesh should be removed, period, regardless if you used denatured alcohol or not. Excess flesh left in a mount just invites problems down the road. Get it all out.


you dont need borax

I dont use borax on fish. I do how ever use 50/50 water and dentured alcohol. I quite using borax or fish many years ago. Like Geo says remove the meat, I go a little futher and remove alot of bone even on bass.

im newby, so here is some things i have learned, remove every thing in the head till you have this allmost skin,,, the lower jaw will be the only thing that wont let you flip it inside out, like a "skin"
and borax, denatured , both have worked for me,,, so far
i dont have the knoledge of years to see how these hold up, but its fun , good luck

Borax is suppose to repel insects also you can mix other preservatives with borax for an extender....Lloyd
