spots on hide after tanning

Submitted by Jason on 07/21/2002. ( ) 209.240.20.176

I just got finished tanning for the first time on a bobcat skin.I used EZ 100. After salting and relaxing I put skin in saftee acid pickle for 4 days, then shaved, degreased and put back in pickle 2 more days. After that neutralized, tanned and oil. I put in freezer till form arrived. I test fit the skin, looked ok so I put in fridge while I prepped and did clay work. Now when I went to mount it I noticed some small reddish purple spots all over one side of the skin. I am new to this so I dont know what this is or what I may have done wrong. I did not see any spots before putting it in fridge but it wasnt in there for more than 2 hours. Would appriciate any help on this. Thanks.

Did the skin touch anything metal while in the fridge or during the process it was being pickled. this may be a reaction to the acid. I once had a whole pickle turn purple because a steel washer feel in to it with the capes. Try some peroxide or some other cleaner to remove the stain.

thanks

I cant think of anything metal that could have touched the skin besides a scapel I used to shave it with. I dont know what happened. I will try it again on next hide. I hope it turns out better. Thanks for the tip Steve.

Was it in a plastic bag?

I had the same problem happen to me one time, then I realized I had put the skin in one of those department store bags with the writing on the outside. The wet skin caused some of the printing to come through the bag and imprint in spots on the skin. Thank God it was on the flesh side, rather than on the hair side, because I couldn't get it out! The cape mounted up with no problems, so hopefully that is what the problem is (was).
Good luck!
