First fish, smallmouth or pike?

Submitted by Don on 07/22/2002. ( ) 199.224.74.103

I have been really intrigued by fish taxidermy for the last year or so.
I have accumulated all of the tools and supplies I think I need to try
and mount a fish. I just returned from Canada and have a smallmouth
and a small northern pike. Any thoughts on which fish I should try
first? I am going to try the quick cast and fill method form the Breakthrough
series book. Any watchouts or tips will be greatly appreciated.

they are very tough skinned and hard to knock scales from. Northern are also good beginner fish, but with the northern it will show bumps easier do to thin skin.

I agree with John C.

A Smallmouth would be good for your first fish.

Thanks

Thanks John C and Fishmandan. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Neither. Catch a fish that you don't care about to keep, for practice.
My first fish turned out, but with errors, 2nd also, third is showable.
