level antlers

Hey Guys(and Gals),
I was taught always to level deer antlers from the base. I just finished a head with a "droop horn" on one side. I think I could have made them look better with a shim, but I stuck to my instructor's advice. Was I right?

My opinion is to always do what looks best for a particular set of antlers. I have yet to come across a set that is level and plumb to their bases. Average out all errors and differences and you will have most likely done all you can do. Move them untill you get the best look then attach them at these specs.

Good luck and happy mounting,

With initials like that he must be a very intelligent individual too.

Setting them by eye just makes them look better. It might throw the antler burr alignment off a bit but it really isn't a big problem. The way I see it is; do you want it to "be right" or do you want it to "look good". They aren't always the same thing. I'm know there are a bunch of purist out there that take tons of measurements and only mount it the exact way it came off but it's up to you (or your customer, if you choose to discuss it with him) how you want to handle it. Man, one more decision that has to be made, I hate it when that happens!
Good luck my friend, B. K. 2
