Hello Rod:
Everybody prefers different things, What I always thought was
the easiest were doing shoulder mounts of small game like a racoon,
a fox or even a shoulder mount of a rabbit. If you're careful rabbit ears
can be easy to turn. Some might not like this point but with these small
game animals you can use dry preserve because you are just trying your
first mount and why go through the tanning if you're not sure you will
want to continue in taxidermy. If you decide you enjoyed mounting up a few
critters and want to continue then you can start tanning your hides or
send them out. But as far as the first one to try my opinion is a small
game shoulder mount for ease of mounting. I'd go with a closed mouth
for my first effort.
Good Luck.

what about a coyote?
i am in the process of setting up a business after being away from everyhting from 20 years - since the money makers fro me are bass and deer i started on bass and will start on deer next week - this is strictly a monetary view
Hi Rod:
A coyote will be fine Rod. Whatever you want to do. I just found
when I started for the practice, the shoulder mount (small game) with closed
mouth were the easiest for me, Atleast that's how I remember it.
You will probably end up like most of us and have to learn how to mount
everything but if you try something first that you think might be
easiest for you, and you do a good job, a little ego building never
hurts to give you that little extra confidence. LOL..
P.S.
No matter what happens keep that first mount. I sure wish I still
had my first mount. (For the old timers) I wonder what J.W. Elwood
ever did with all our pictures. LOL.
Good Luck.
Bob
But they used my pics to wallpaper bathroom walls all over Omaha. Figured that they were enough to scare the poop out of anyone anyways.
Along those same lines, I wonder if the feeling of being ready to set the outdoor world afire with our newfound tallents, when we had finally received our "diploma", is similar to the feelings of the new breed of taxidermist fresh out of taxidermy school? It probably is quite similar, except that we were only out $12.95.
Try a small animal with a dosal incision along back, just make a body core from foam excellsor Fill the legs with filler
