squirrel mountin kit

I ordered a kit to mount a squirrel with and was wondering about the uses of some of the products that are in the kit. I just finished the squirrel and it looks ok, but I can see room for alot of improvement. I tried to follow the directions and hope I did everything good enough.

QUESTIONS:

1. borax , the directions say to place unskinned squirrel in a pan filled with the borax. My question is for what purpose do you do this and for how long do you leave it in there?

2. Dry perservitive , the kit comes with 3oz of it and I was wondering if you should have any left when your done?

3. Hide paste, how in the world do you keep from getting it all over the place , when it came to the sewing up of the squirrel I was so sticky that I had to pull the needle off my hands on every stitch.
How do you handle this?

4. WASCO clay, my problem with the clay is that it drys out to fast , what do you do about this and are there any other types of clay that stay moldable for a longer period of time?

Thanks for your help!

The borax is used to help skinning. It soaks up body fluids, and make for an faster clean up of the counter tops.

As long as you had enough to give the skin a good coating it will do fine.

3. Hide paste, how in the world do you keep from getting it all over the place , when it came to the sewing up of the squirrel I was so sticky that I had to pull the needle off my hands on every stitch.

Keep a spray bottle of water handy and keep it wet around the area you are sewing, After your done simple clean and extra with water.

4. WASCO clay, my problem with the clay is that it drys out to fast , what do you do about this and are there any other types of clay that stay moldable for a longer period of time?

Again a sray bottle will work.

I have that same problem with the hide paste thing.I just keep a bowl of water to dunk my hands in and I use a napkin while sewing. It will give you a better grip and you will be able to pull your needle through much easier.
