Question on rattlesnake

Submitted by John on 08/06/2002. ( ) 209.240.222.131

My question is a friend caught a rattler alive and froze it that there would be no damage, been frozen about three months. Another guy said that freezing it is just like the snake going into hibernation, any truth to that or is he just yanking my chain. What could I say, new to this and just want to play it safe. Thanks

If he's been in the freezer that long.....he's dead. Once the snake is frozen through, including the interal organs, it's dead.

Be careful around the head when you thaw, because the snake is still venomous.

With no return e-mail address you leave me no choice except to let people think you are stupid or something! The person that gave you that advice was me! And if you remember the conversattion, you asked me about a HUMANE! way to kill the snake. I SAID! Freeze it. is is likt going into hybernation as its internal temp will drop along with its metabolism, and willg o to sleep and just never wake up! REMEMBER? No body ever suggested, that it would come back alive. You asked for a good way to humanely kill the snake withut damage, and freezing it is the best and most humane way. If the others who posted responces feel silly now. they should! Yank this!

P.S. According to the latest data from the CDC, and the poison control center, it is no longer venemous in the classic sense after the venom(protein) is frozen for 72 hours. It will give you a very bad infection, and it wuill hurt, and you ill get sick from the infection, buts its ability to shut down the nervous sysytem as a neurotoxin, is gone!

Typically, rattlesnakes do not carry neurotoxins except maybe two.
P.S. I would like to see that data. I've been a keeper for several years. Have you ever noticed? People on this site get upset over nothing, maybe taxi work is just a little to much for some of us!

L.C. I only get upset and maybe a little bit overly so when people do not listen when you tell them something, and then go ahead and repeat something and say someone else said it, when if they were listening in the first place, would have no need to reask the question. It has nothing to do with being a TAXI, more like sick of answering questions for prople who just do not pay attention, and then say you said something that you never did!1 Thats what pisses me off. As for feling stupid, what i should have aaid was I cannot understand why you cannot see through her explanation, as to what probably really transpired. As for the Neurotoxin, the post I related that to was a general asumption, being as he did not stete what kind of snake it was he was refering to. I contacted a venom supply house a year ago or so, inregards to supplying them with venom to make anti-venin. I deal with some of the most venemous snakes in the world and some of the rarest. I figured someone would have a use for the venom if extracted , what with all the weird reptiles people have as pets these days. You never know! I was told by the research team, that unless i was to milk the venom from the live snake, and also prepare it very shortly thereafter, it loses most of its properties. After 72 hours in a frezer, i was told that all the special things that a parcticular venom has in its repertoir of harm, are neutralized to nothing more than a real bad infectionable property. Not all, but most! If you felt like i was insulting you by the post, i apologize. like i said, i am just sick and tired of people recanting a story incorrectly, when it applies to someones reputation. Also, why must people be so afraid to leave an e-mail to reply to. I left mine!

Thanks for the info Tom

didn't know about the neurotoxin loosing it's punch after 72 hours in the freezer. Need to talk to you more often considering I am dealing with plenty of rattlers myself all the time.
