I started at 12 and what I couldn't hunt down for myself, I augmented with roadkills. Amy Ritchie started with pet shop rats, I think. If you WANT to be a taxidermist, you'll have to start improvising from the get-go. There ain't many free rides available. Good luck.
Get yourself some traps and catch your own critters, they don't come any cheaper than this and your surplus you can sell for the fur. I made all of my spending money in school by trapping. Good luck.
I also started when I was 12 years old and hunting was fun, but I rarly got anything to mount. I just asked others to help me find some things to practice on, and almost all of the guys offered me a duck or other bird to try out, as well as squirrels and rabbits. Roadkill is the name I am know by from all the animals I use to find on the road and bring home for practice as well. You would be supprized at the number of critters you can find that are mountable from the roadside.
Also, if you want to e-mail me with your address, I can maybe offer you a few extra criters from the trap lines this year. We caught fifty or so raccoons last year as well as skunks and foxes and all manner of critters.
Don't over look the comon piegon either, you can get a simple trap and catch them to mount. They are good practice. Any mall or overpass in a city may have plenty of them.

i have a trap, but i never catch anything, what should i put in it? i am putting dried deer corn in it, but i never catch anything and i guess i could ask some of the local "Hunters" if they have any left over skins to practice tanning, and animals for stuffing.
Hi Tim, If we knew where you were located, maybe somebody close could help you out. We generally have extra's in our freezers.

Put some sardines in that trap. They will catch just about anything and everything. Peeled boiled eggs are really good for coons. I know a professional coon hunter and he uses these methods for all of his trapping. Corn is a very good bait . . . . . . for deer and quail. Coons eat corn, but not in a trap most of the time. Good luck.
