Tumbling is more for rugs.After what you said why would you want to tumble a deer cape for?
In a 6' high by 4' wide Drum its common to use 2 - 50 Lb. Bags of Commercial sawdust to a full load of skins or capes. The weight of the sawdust plus the weight of the skins or capes is what actually provides the softening effect.
