I purchased a cape from a commercial tannery in Indiana. The cape has a 24" neck with full winter hair, very long. Everything was as advertised. My question is regarding the color. The cape is very light colored almost a blonde color and I was wondering if this has anything to do with the tanning or if some deer are just more of a blonde color. My five privious mounts are all a brown color. The face on this cape has a carrot top and a grey muzzel witch looks great. I just mounted it yesterday so it is still wet. Just wondering if it's OK. One more thing - it was a dry tan and after mounting I sprayed with "Hair Relax" from Van Dykes prior to combing it out. I've used it on all my deer so far, so I don't think that is why. Thanks for any responses.

I'm in Indiana, but the color you describe isn't a common color here.
However, I mounted one last year exactly as described in your description.
It was from Montana. According to a fellow I know that hunted that
particular region for thirty years, that color phase was common for a
number of years.
It will be interesting to hear from some of the other states.
im in alabama and have mounted a lot of deer i used to think all deer were the same color basically, but there really is a wide variety, they are just like people or snowflakes no two are the same theres a little difference in color on all of them.
the colors your seeing are very normal for us, esp where i live
there are deer from nearly black brown, to very white gold and some even have the dark strype down there noses! ( i want one of those lol) so good luck have fun
Thanks for the response. This cape may be from Montana. It had a 7" "eye to nose" with a 24" neck which I heard was also typical of a Montana Buck. Here in Michigan the bigger deer tend to have longer faces. Also has a bit of a black stripe on his nose. I was just afraid the tan might be bad, but I guess not. Thanks again!
