I have been having a problem with the scent glands on my mule deer opening up during the drying stage..I usually t-pin the heck out of them to keep them where I want them but they still seemed to open up...Any ideas?Should I be sewing them to prevent this from happening?

Which Ones?

Are you refering to the preorbital gland or the tarsal gland? It would be helpful to know the following. What kind of tan or preservative? Hide Paste? Also there is a bit of shrinkage in all skins, if you use too large a form that the skin fits snug, the shrinkage(even minimal shrinkage) will be more noticable. You really shouldn't have to sew the preorbital gland, assuming that this is the problem area. A GOOD glue will usually be the way to solve this problem.

Shaving

The opening may actually be caused by shrinkage. You need to shave the
area around the pre-orbital gland thin.

Yes it is the preorbital gland..I send off all my stuff to a commercial tanner and am not sure what they use.I might be using a less than adequate hide paste..Thanks Old Fart.

Perry May Have Nailed Your Problem

Shaving everything thin in my prep has become so second nature in my cape preparation that I didn't even consider that. If you use the better hide pastes and still have the problem then shaving the area around the tear duct will probably solve your problem.
