It has to calmed down first

I used to trap a lot of skunks when red fox trapping. Use a small leg hold trap or the "have a heart" type. The secret to not being sprayed is to stay way back, 40 yards or so, and shoot the skunk in the chest only once, NOT HEAD, with a 22 short when it is calm and the is tail down then get away so as not to upset it and then come back the next day or several hours later and it will be dead with little or no smell. Use a small hole only for bait, with the trap hidden in front of it and tied down in a place he would go or with the have a heart type use a cracked egg; it will find it.

TJ;
Try a live trap,and if your intending to release it.Cover the trap with a tarp, or blanket.Usually the skunk won't spray when the trap is covered.Now I said USUALLY.doesn't mean it won't.We use PVC pipe to put the cover over the trap.If your going to dispatch the skunk we
drown them. Good luck,And keep alot of tomato juice around...lol
P.S.Tomato juice removes the smell of skunk on your body.

TJ, I trapped one in a live trap like Coyote described. Drove it on my trailer a few miles away and released it--no spray, BUT then found out that in NC it's illeagle to release any skunk once trapped. Seems since they are so famous for carrying rabies (and we have a lot of that here) that everyone is happier if the little stinker dies. Everyone but the skunk anyway. A few days after I relocated the skunk my wife drove in from work to see her hound tossing a small cat around. She piled out of the car and into the cloud that the "cat" was putting onto the hound. She flew to cussing so loudly that I just stayed in the shop- seemed safer. Then my wife did the natural thing, went in the bedroom to get out of her skunk suit. BIG mistake....house now all stinky too. Bathe the hound, bathe the wife, shoot the skunk, and live with that odor for a long time! Good luck w/yours, Aaron H.

I think the 22 short is the best method.

Follow Jim's directions exactly as written. That method has never failed me. The other ones usually work but not all the time. Sight that gun in first, you only get one shot. One thing you might keep in mind.... There is rarely such thing as "one skunk".
good luck, BK

Minnesota Live trap

There is a live trap called the Minnesota Live trap. Basicaly it is a large square plastic pail with the live trap mechanism. The skunk can't see you approach and if you slowly move the trap and don't look in the end. You can set this in the back of a pick up and take it to where ever you want. Normaly I would tell someone to place the trap in a creek if there is a skunk in it. But I won't. Someone could be offended by this. So I won't. I have only had a skunk go off in one of these once. And the Peroxide, soda,soap treatment works extremely well.
