Dont worry about the dirt. When you get home - shake out the Salt on it now, and apply another layer - then fold it and set it somewhere on a piece of plywood with one edge propped up so its slanted and any fluids drain away. Leave it there for 1-2 more days - then again shake out the salt, and then hang it to dry hard. Try to keep the pelt as dry as possible during this salt curing process.
One you're ready to tan it - first relax it, then place it in the pickling solution and let it pickle for 1-2 days or longer. When you're ready to wash it - remove it - let it drain for 30 minutes - wash it up - rinse well - and then return it to the pickle until you next ready to neutralize and tan it.
