I have recenty trapped a fox and was wondering how best to deal with the brush - is there any way i can soak it in something or dry it out without having to remove the bone - or will it just rot? Failing this what is the best way to remove the bone without splitting the skin?

No matter what direction you take, you can't get there from here. First and foremost, the bone AND MEAT must be removed from the tail. Otherwise it WILL rot and all the hair will fall out. Secondly, the ONLY way to remove the tail and insure that the meat is all removed is to split it. Once it is split, the bone and meat removed, you can take grocery store Borax and coat the flesh liberally. Then you carefully and completely sew it back together. Don't expect this to be flexible once it's dried either. It will be brittle and will break if you bend it. In order for it to be limp and soft like leather, it has to be TANNED like leather. Borax won't do that.
Thought i could get away with an easy solution - so i suppose im off to the grocer then....and better be "brushing" up on my sewing skills!
