Attaching European Skulls to panels (upper jaw only)

Submitted by Mary on 09/19/2002. ( muleskinnermary@hotmail.com ) 209.161.50.107

I'm looking for the nicest way to attach a whitetail (upper jaw) to the
pedestal panel from McKenzie Supply. I saw the article in one of the
Breakthrough's for attachment (cutting off some of the skull in back and
filling with bondo for smaller skulls, then using screws to attach to
panel). Are drywall screws used, and if no bondo is used is screwing into
the skull strong enough to hold? Small pre-drilled holes most likely
recommended? Any other ideas?

There are a number of various methods.....Toggle bolts will work, as well as anything. The archives have lots of methods used by others.

Mary, I cut the skull off and fill the back with bondo but put several small pieces of wood scrap into the bondo where they will be hit by the screws. Screws into bondo alone is not too secure and screws into bone alone is not either unless you are talking a BIG skull. A deer skull is quite sturdy when attatched to the panel with 3 screws long enough to get a good grip on those wood blocks in the bondo. Enjoy, Aaron H.
