Shipping Lynx to UK - HELP!

Submitted by Bonnie B (aka Wolfwoman) on 09/19/2002. ( thepredator@gci.net ) 12.12.200.17

Anyone know the regs? I've looked all over online and can't seem to find anything specific. I have CITES tags, but was wondering if anything else is required? The post office doesn't care... any info you can give me would be appreciated before I do this and get myself in trouble! LOL

Your biggest consideration is going to be the regs of the Lynx going into the UK. Whoever the customer is, have them find out! It may be legal for you to ship it out of your state, but may not be legally imported into the UK.

You must get a CITES permit from the United States in order to ship the lynx out of the country. You will also have to complete a fish and wildlife declaration form. Call your nearest Fish and Wildlife (Federal) office and get the information from them. If you tell me where you are located, I can tell you who to call.

The pelt I have has a CITES tag attached to it still, is that sufficient? I am in Palmer, Alaska. The buyer is from eBay as that's where I had the lynx listed, and I'd listed it for sale to US only, but he got it, so now I may as well send if I can do it legally. He had bought quite a few taxidermy items, and he did ask about the CITES tag, so I'm going under the assumption here that he knows what he's doing. Plus he wants another one! Sheesh. Thanks for all your help, I'll stop by in a few to see if you've responded again!

Check with the Alaska Fur Buyers Association. They can help you out. The UK restrictions are for your customer to worry about. You still need the declaration form, unless you want to ship it as: Over Coat, Kit: Part #1, left sleeve, box number one of forty. There used to be quarantiness on animals and parts at the entry port of the EEOC......I have no clue what the current regs are.

Check with the USFWS in AK.

Cur,
I found out some stuff... :)
I called USFWS here in Anchorage, and it's a ROYAL pain. First I have to drive the 40 mins to Anchorage, fill out a 5 page form, pay $25, and all this for ONE TIME USE... I can ship one or a thousand hides this ONE time, but if I send again, it's another $25. I know there's got to be a better way to do this, as I KNOW people ship things to the UK. There's got to be some kinda permanant permit or something.. ARGH! Excuse me for ranting, but I REALLY can't stand politics!

I'm making a trip to Anchorage tomorrow anyways, so will stop at the Fur Exchange and see what they have to say.
Thanks!

CITES is an international treaty. The rules are the same for the 150 or so countries that adhere to it. One time use only permits for shipments. If you don't send the permit, it will get seized on the other end in the UK. I don't agree with the comment that you don't have to worry about the UK laws, it's up to the importer. As a responsible seller, I think you need to make sure you are doing things right.

Plan on it....

But if this buyer doesn't want to pay the extra for the permits, he's not geting my pelts! I haven't gotten a response from him yet, so we'll see. Would hate to see such nice pelts siezed and....who knows WHAT happens to them then?

My company can assist you with shipping out of the U.S. You will have to have an import/export license from US Fish & Wildlife and anyother
permits needed. You may contact me at the above email and I will be glad to help you. Many of my customers ship international with me.
