fish eyes question

Hi guys.I mostly just do mammals but here lately I've started trying my luck on fish.I recently mounted a 2 lb. crappie and Van Dykes catalog called for a 14 mm eye. However when dry the eye socket was a LOT bigger than 14 mm.I wound up filling the "gap" around the eye with Modgepodge, which dried cloudy and did'nt look right.Do you pros ever run into this problem and if so how do you handle it? Any advice would be much appreciated.

You fill the eye orbit with epoxy clay and set the eye in it. Then you finish around it. The glass eye is only the colored part, you have to construct the eyeball part. You need a good fish taxidermy book before you start your next one.

Or use Matt Thompsons eye sockets

You can set the eyes when you mount the fish. It takes very little finish wrok. Cost a whole buck, thats right one USD. You can use almost any glass eye with them.
