Bear rug

I am a avid whitetail shoulder mounting amature. I have done about 100 or more. Most have been dry pre. and recently changed to cream tan. I just went to North Carolina and Killed a nice Black bear. I want to do a rug mount with it. The problem is, I dont have a clue and will buy a video. Just want a heads up to the whole thing.

1. Would I want to have this thing soft tanned?
2. Do you remove the head and mount and reattach(sew) later?
3. Are pads on paws left or skinned out?

I read through alot of the archives and did not see my answers. I probable did not look long enough but I did search for awile.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, Unless you have a lot of time on your hands and lots of energy, you want to send this thing out and have it tanned. You'll have enough to do to it once it comes back.Rineharts has a pretty good video on doing a rug. Might be your best bet.No you don't cut the head off.I usually rehydrate and finish the heads before I rug, just to keep everything nice and clean. When I have I hide I know is going to be a rug I skin out the feet but remove most of the pad.I don't use them on my rugs, others do.One thing about the Rineharts video...they use hot glue,I don't reccomend it.Eventually it will let loose.Good luck
