You left just to many questions for me to give you an informed response.Did you double salt and dry this hide before you tanned it?Have you ever washed it? Bear are greasy creatures and just good old dawn won't cut all that gunk.Give us the rest of the story and maybe someone can answer.
Sorry, Yes it has been salted dried then rehydrated. Has been cream tanned and ready to mount. After I tanned it I noticed the hair slipping some, and the hair is still greasy. I washed it in dawn before I tanned it. I'm a little worried about washing it again because of the hair slipping.Got any advise?
I use JRTS extensively, but I don't think it's what's needed for bears. Bears (or any furbearers) should be professionally tanned. If you insist, they must be pickled first. To skip that step on any fur bearer is asking for big trouble. Once pickled and shaved, it is safe to wash the hide in a good quality soap (and Dawn is just a weak imitation of a REAL soap) Then I'd use a submersible tan so that I could continually monitor the pH. Then I'd neutralize and oil. Still, bears are better done by the people who do nothing else. I think you're going to be in the same trouble when you attempt to was out the grease. If the hair is slipping before you start, it's not going to stop by adding water to the equation.
