My brother-in-law shot a 1300lb moose. When they cleaned it they split it from brisket to middle of the neck to remove the wind pipe. No they did not cut the bell they stopped about 4" from the bell. is the cape still good? do i just split down the back of the neck then have it tanned, then sew the throat? or is it no good. I got the cape for nothing but would like to keep it if it will be ok.
Thanks
Dave

AFTER you tell him what a dumass he was. If it were me, I'd use the short incision now to get the head out and leave it just the way it is for the tannery. Have it WET TANNED and when it comes back, use a lock stitch from the inside. THEN you can cut it down the nape if you'd like or just go ahead with the short incision mount.
I agree with George. The cape is still very useable. The only way to go as far as I am concerned is to wet tan all capes and lifesize skins. Just keep it frozen until you are ready to mount it!
