Making pedestal bases out of shed antlers?

I have seen pedestal bases made out of a few shed antlers, or sometimes just one large one. It looks like the deer is being held up by one antler tine.. very cool looking. If you don't know what I'm talking about, they show alot of them in the Joe Coombs catalog. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I can't figure out how the deer could be attached to the antler, and the antler attached to the base...

Thanks!

Amy

One way I know of with a drill, a bit and sum metal rod...

drill a hole down into your chosen tine as far as you can go. Then drill up from the bottom as high as you can go. Stick a steel rod down the top hole and epoxy it in place.. jam it up into the foam mannikin and epoxy it int here as well. The bottom is a bit trickier. If you want to mount the antler to a wood base you can drill a hole into the wood all the way through.. then off to one side of the hole carve a groove in the bottom large enough to accomodate the steel. bend the steel into an L shape - lay one end down in the groove and have the other end go up through the hole and into the bottom of the antler. Make sure that the groove in the bottom points to the heavy side of the mount - it will help to balance it. So its back heavy - point the steel to the back. =) If you do one up - I want pix! =)
