About noon today an individual brought two deer for me to mount. Antlers are still on the skull with capes. Both were frozen solid. They have been in my shop since then at a temperature between 50 and 60 degrees. I work and can"t cape them out and get them salted down until I get off work tomorrow at about 3:30. I plan on hanging them up with a fan on low and leaving until tomorrow afternoon. My question is....am I taking a chance of damaging the capes by leaving them in the open for this long?
The deer I mounted last year that were frozen like this seemed to take forever to thaw out but I"m still nervous about leaving them 27 hours without working them up. Thanks so much for the advice. Jim

I would not worry, cause 27hrs...is ok... and I have done it before... If you run into slipping...it is field care, not the 27 hrs...
Also, I would not have fan on these, cause I don't want to over dry any parts thereof...and 50 degrees is better than 60. And if the hair falls off of both don't blame me, cause it's just my advice and it's free...
Jim , I just got a frozen head last night about 7:00 pm and had it out in my basement . When I got home at 4:30 , it was just thawed enough to cape out . In fact , semi frozen in spots .
It ain't gonna thaw in 24 hours anyway. Leave it on the floor and check it, but expect it to take nearly 2 days. Deer hair is a great insulator without AND within.
