Dad always hated alum when it came to tanning, but unfortunately he was killed before he could pass on the recipe. I know it contained 20 mule team borax and salt; what ratio I don't know. I am sure there was more ingredients, but I was young and didn't pay much attention, I'm sorry to say. I have some of his hides that are 20 yrs. old and they look as good as the day he finished them. Would like to try and duplicate his success. I know they were soaked for a week because during that time we had to use the shower as the bathtub was in use. Yes, we were somewhat hillbilly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
