Having capes tanned professonally?

Submitted by jj on 12/18/2002. ( ) 24.225.9.100

I am going to send my capes out this year to have them tanned professionally. i have contacted Advantage fur Dressing in Houston, and they seem like real nice people. The answered a million questions I had for them except one, that led to a few more. They said some of their customers mount their deer DRY. Do they mean that they don't rehydrate the cape when they get it back? Is this even possible? does anyone on here use Advantage Fur Dressing, and how do you rehydrate your skins?

I have been using Advantage for seven years. What they mean by dry is that they are sending those taxidermists a dry tanned cape back. Yes of course it is being rehydrated before mounting. Couldn't do it otherwise. They are a very good tannery. I used to get the dry tan but now switched to wet tan. It's just a personal preference and has nothing to do with the quality of the wet versus dry tan. If you use the dry tan you need to rehydrate your cape. I just soak it in cool water for about 15 minutes, wring out some excess water and place in an open plastice bag in the fridge overnight.
