I wish to mount my deer head for the first time and would like to know how long that I can keep my unskinned head and cape in the freezer without doing any damage to it?

The key here is wrapping it completely secure so that there won't
be any freezer burn. A skinned out head is very easy to keep for
years if done right, but with the antlers still there that poses
a real problem. Some of my customers have kept them in a freezer
for a year or so and when I get them they have put them in 2 plastic
bags and tied it up around the base of the antlers. The problems is
that the air can still get to the top of the head (between the antlers)
And when freezer burn gets it.. it is difficult to handle. Freezer burn
is just like freeze dried coffee. There is NO MOISTURE so the hide dries out.
Best bet , in my opinion, is to skin it out, wrap it in newspapers (several
layers) and then bag it and tie it up. If skinning is not an option, then wrap
newspapers around the head with attention to eye, nose, ears. Tape is all shut
remember the area between the antlers and try to get a hugh bag to include
the antlers. Thats all I know to tell you.
