Well folks I got myself a real problem here hope someone can help. Was working a appriticship type program for a local taxidermist and he bailed on me in the middle of a project. WE were working on a fisher and got as far as skinning it the ears eyes and lips have all been split and turned and it has been what he called rough fleshed. The next step was to but a type of tanning cream on the hide which I did not sure what type this is all I can tell you is it came in a gallon size jug was a light tan color and had tanning cream written in white letters on the jug. He said the next step was to use a skife knife to clean up the hide but left before we got to that step I now have a fisher in the riferderator with some type of cream on the skin and have no idea where to go next. Things such as is the hide tanned or not he said something about a different cream we would but on later to sofen the hide. and where to I go from here can the hide be frozen and shipped out to be finished or can I use a skife knive and shave it down and be done with the taning process and try to mount it. This is a friends hide who gave it to me in good faith that he would get it back in good shape.(as good as a beginner could do anyways) If possible I would like to try and make this happen even if it isn't mounted if it can be saved he can bring it somewhere else and get it finished. I know this info isn't a lot to go on but any help I can get to finish this mount up will be a big help thanks in advance for any and all help

I hate to say this but it's a tough question to answer here. Some of the reason are we have no idea on what he if it was tanned at all. Don't fear for you can place it in the freezer and either find out from him what did they use here or you can retan the hide. To do this just click on the search button and type in retanning a hide. It can be done by yourself or it can be sent to a tannery and let them know what's going on. From there you'll be able to mount it.

Do yourself a favor. Throw the skin in the freezer. Hit the archives and see what we have been saying for years about tanning, shaving, DEGREASING, etc. Youll find lots of useful stuff that will help you get out from behind a scary but workable situation. Youll do just fine!

Sounds like JRTS

John Rinehart Tanning Solution comes in a gallon jug with white letters saying "Tanning Cream" on it. I've used JRTS for years and have always been satisfied with the results and ease of use,

thanks
