I hardly use DP anymore but when I did ,I noticed that it was up to me to take care of the skin in other words prep it correctly ,if you wash it and rinse with a bactericide or simply alcohol and thinned it well, you shouldn't have any hair loss except if the cape was already bad from the beginning.I always recommend Van Dykes instant preserve,I never had any problems with it.
In either process, field care is paramount and shop care is just as important. I can't use the Van Dykes DP as it's too fine and dries my skin too badly. I use Touchstone's Bess Maid and I love it.
Try this formula it is top secret, so I don't want too many taxidermists to find out so shhhhh > Take about 8 ounces of either Liqua Tan ot Protol , add 1 ounce Lysol concentrate 1 ounce white Vinegar ,the cheaper the better, 1/2 pound of Van Dykes Instant Preserve ,Mix real good until you get a smooth paste,prep your skin as you and I know , wash with alcohol ,tumble dry. Brush on this paste set in the refrig or freeze if you need to 24 hours,then mount tell me how much shrinkage you avoid,and no hair slippage,cape must be in good condition for this wet preserve , if the cape smells funny then I make an Aluminum Sulfate Hot pickle , that is water that is hot but not hand burning hat and I put the green cape in there for 24 Hours to 48 hours,Rinse with soapy water and then Clean water, to which you can add Lysol or some other bacteriazide,Shave and thin ,brush the wet Preserve set away for minimun 4 hours and Mount.
PS.The hot pickle you need to add double the salt and aluminun sulfate
than what is prescribe in most aluminum sulfate formulas , it is the only way I found to stop hair loss in some terminal capes.
It's my skin that the VD DP effects badly. I'm sure it works, but I just don't tolerate it well.
with me is not my hands but my nose, it gives me hay fever so I wear a mask when I'm Mixing it.
Lysol is now useless as a bacteriazide since they removed the phenol from it.
