Don't mean to get anybody's panties in a wad with this question but here goes anyway.I have a 16" wt deer cape, short y incision,dp method, fleshed good but not shaved. How much stretch could i get using the inflatable ball trick mentioned in the archives? This will be my second mount the other one turned out fine comsidering i mounted a small 8 point rack on a doe head. He she looked a little, well maybe a lot, bug eyed but I learned a lot working on that doeboy had fun to.When is the best time to stretch? just before mounting or what? For you tanners,i'm going to try that method on my third mount.lol

You won't get much stretch at all if any. And the hermaphrodite deer sounds like some kind of sick joke. Why didn't you just leave it a nice doe mount?
That is a transexual deer , unless he mounted it with the nuts.
and you' wont get much strectch with the ballon
I find the 'best time' to Stretch...is in the morning...Limbers up the ole mucles for the rest of the day...BUT...'Before' having your Wheaties...Hope this helps.
When you use DP, what you see is what you get. DP is just a preservative and the hide is generally in a "green" state when you begin. Never apply the DP until you are READY to do the mounting. This will assure you the most stretch you can get. In fact, those 26 inch whitetails that seem to show up are usually DP mounts as a green hide will always have more stretch than a tanned hide. Once the DP is applied, the astringent effect of the alum, borax and talc will cause your hide to constrict and dry quickly. That's why applying DP is the last step before actual mounting.
The ball or inner tube trick is for a tanned hide that has shrunk during the pickle and tanning process.
