I have also heard it called sal soda. Is there someplace other than a supply catalog to buy this. Is there a more comercial name for it? For example sodium bicarbonate=baking soda.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. If you are going to use it to boil skulls just use the sodium bicarb. When heated to boiling it converts to sodium carbonate.

Do not confuse it with sodium borate, not the same.

Adding b,soda

This response submitted by Mike Dunbar on 03/26/2003. ( ) 209.206.208.248

Anytime you add a salt, like baking soda, or talble salt, to boiling water, you increase the boiling point. Cooks add salt to boiling water to cook food more quickly because the salt attract water molecules making it more difficult to boil, thereby increasing the temp. Point is, you are making the water hotter, and possibly increasing the chance of damaging the bone. If you are boiling be careful, otherwise you can let them macerate naturally in water for a few weeks to clean them. Search the archives and you will find a lot of recent discussion on this, also Raven posted a recommended method for skull cleaning as well as others, George?
