jaw set not fitting

Submitted by cam on 03/26/2003. ( ) 24.67.253.204

hey there. Iam mounting my first bear shoulder mount.Iam having a hard time getting the jawset to fit. The bear is a medium size, I ordered the matching jawset but the bottom jaw piece overhung the form by 1/4 inch in width. The top fit good. I cut the top jaw of the form off to carve it out then pinned it together.I tryed to slide in the jawset but it was to wide. SO I ordered a smaller set and the bottom fits good but the top is too small.I dont know if I can mix-and-match the two without it looking unproportional? Iam useing a Jonas,,,,, mabye a mohr would fit better? If you have any good advice to help me along, that would be great. thanks

Hard to tell without seeing what you're doing. I use the Mohr Lifelike Color Jaw sets all the time with no problems like you mentioned.

Cam, I'm thinking that if you had a good fit on the top with the first set that you just need to carve out the inside of the bottom mouth area till the bottom fits. I would guess that the total width of the jaw is not greater than the width of the form in that area so it would seem that a proper fit could be had. After digging out the foam from the form you will have to sculpt back in with Apoxie or similar material. Years ago all the jaw sets had to be custom fitted. Now some forms are molded so it has become a "drop-in" affair pretty much but there are still those forms on the market requiring more work than others. If I could see this problem in person I might have other ideas but from here this seems like the way to go to me. Enjoy, Aaron H.

Aaron H. Thanks for helping me out, but the lower set is 1/4 wider than the form. I wonder if I can build the lower jaw form with clay to increase the width enough to compensate for the jaw set? I would have to see if the cape is big enough to do so? Let me know what you think, Thanks

Why don't you call the vendor you got your form from and see if they have a tech. dept. It might not even take that. Most companies have lists of suggested components that go with particular forms . Just a thought. Jeff F.

Cam, I would probably not increase the form's outside dimension to accomodate the jaw set because you then may not have a fit for the cape. One thing though.....if this form is not an open mouth form or it's one of the type that you have to carve out the opening, remember that bears' front teeth do not come up as close to the front lips as most critters such as coyotes do. If you are attempting to install the jaw set too far forward it would most likly get too narrow for the jaw set. The thicker lips of a bear give the look of the teeth sitting back a bit-good reference photos will show proper position. Other than this I would say that The Rookie is on to something. It can be awfully frustrating ordering parts that don't work and can get real expensive too. I think call the supplier at this point. Good luck sorting this out- Aaron H.

May I add something

Cam, yes the front teeth set back from the top lip, but then the lower teeth set back behind the top teeth. Maybe you are trying to install the lower set to far forward. Definately check reference. When the mouth opens angles change. When checking reference, you will see there seems to be alot of lower lip extended forward from the lower teeth. I know everyone talks about using reference, one thing is, you have to know how to read (understand) the reference, angle of picture, what is the specimen trying to do etc. Not to confuse you, but this is a whole story in its self. LOL
