Pedestals

I saw a nice elk pedestal mount in Gander Mountain the other day and the back was covered with the hide insted of leather, felt, ect. Did they use a tanned peice of the animal for this (2 pieces cape and extra piece of the back) or did they some wrap the cape to cover the back then sew? If they wraped and anyone on this site has done this I'd like some info on that...it seems imposible to do! Thanks everyone

What I did

I had 3/4 of the hide to work with and simply took the center back straight off the back of the pedestal. As I worked around the bottom, I severed the hide as I went up. I was left with a piece of hide much like the old cartoon can of beans lid. Once I had only that tab holding the hide, then I draped it over the pedestal back and upholstereded it flat against the inset piece. (By the way, I'd taken 1/4 luan paneling and wet it and formed it to the back of the pedestal cutout so that I'd have something to staple and tack into. Epoxy held the panelling in place and then epoxy held the hide down flat.) When you stood behind the mount, you could see the varying colors of hide as it darkened down the backbone , go vertical and disappear at the bottom of the pedestal.

Thanks George

Was the seam were the sides and the "back" part that you draped over real noticeable, or did you groom the hair a certian way?

Also, a little of the subject but will most 2 part epoxies adhere wood/foam and a hide? What is your preferance? Sounds like Epo is the way to go. Thanks again
