Here in Pa. we basically have to BUY roadkill, we're required to call the local game warden and pay set fees per animal, the going rate on a roadkill squirrel is currently 25.00!..We are new to taxidermy but this seems more than a bit strange to me and was wondering if this is the "norm" for other states as well? We live near WV, anyone know if you have to buy roadkill there, of course, I'd have to check on that, there's probably some sort of roadkill import tax...

I live in NH and a game warden told me just yesterday that if I pick up roadkill, just to call them and they would give me a permit to use them for mounting. He did not say anything about a fee. If they want to charge for the permit, they should charge the people that hit these animals. They are the ones killing them, not us who try to make use of the bad situation. That's just my opinion.
lol That's crazy! Just this past early archery season I found a nice non typ. 10 point on the side of the road. The hind legs were broke from the accident and there was a slug hole through the neck.
I call the DNR and asked if I could field dress the deer and take it. He asked me where I was going to register it and then called it in to that registration station with my first and last name. Then said a road kill tag will be waiting there for me. He didn't even have to come to tag the deer or anything. Only stipulation was I had to get it to the registration station with in 4 hours and I had to take full resposiblity for the animal (carcus, hide, everything).
Oh-yeah I talked to a business across the street from where the deer was and he said he had seen the trooper shoot the deer at 10am. I was there at 11am, good timing on my part!
Well, lets take a look at the Pa. Game Commission Handbook~~ Joe, that roadkill deer would have set you back some big bucks here in Pa, because when talking about Deer, they charge not only for the animal itself, we get charged per point~~ $10.00 per point to be exact plus it looks like another $25.00 if you want the entire hide.. that deer would cost $125.00 in Pa~~ for roadkill, as in, it's dead, mangled, going to rot and become a nasty, stinking eyesore! I hear alot of people talk about starting out/practicing with roadkill, well, it can get pretty expensive here in Pa!
What is this country coming to,pay for a roadkill ?
Cheaper to move out of 'the' State and relocate elsewhere if you're going to do taxidermy work...even just for yourself.
You can buy a frozen Squirrel for $10.00.

Here all roadkill is illegal to pick up unless it is in season. Deer on the other hand can be picked up at any time as long as they are called in to the DNR and they give you a confirmation number, however it is illegal to sell/trade/buy any part of a road kill deer. You are stuck with it. Turkeys are illegal to pick up period even if they do damage your vehicle. I have been successful in obtaining permits from Missouri, Hell they thought it was funny when I asked for a permit for a coon but no hassle and I had the permit within 2 days of calling. Dan
When I picks up Roadkills...they alreay have the permits with them...tucked under their arm. They like to make things convenient for loco taxydermusts.

Can't touch 'em here. If you hit a deer and kill it, you are allowed to keep it. Small compensation for $2000 worth of damage to your vehicle.
Joe you got over on the deer but let me tell you, if it's on the road dead in Wisconsin it belongs to the DNR.And if you pick the thing up before calling you're in for loads of trouble.Red tag fees run anywhere from $25.00 to $100.00 depending on the wardens frame of mind. The fee is discrecionarey on their part.So for anyone who isn't sure about the status of roadkills in their state be sure to check with your local conservation officers and don't ask somebody like Joe who is only going to get you in trouble.
In NY state all you have to do is contact the local PD or Sheriffs in that area and they will be glad to give you a road kill tag. I know I issue about a dozen a month here where I am at. If you are cought with out a tag though it will/can cost you about 1000.00$ fines for posession of an untagged deer. Small game has to be in season to posess.
NUT
I live in PA to and if I find it i'll pick it up depending on what it is. Small things like squirrel, grouse, pheasant etc i'm not paying 25$ when I can go to a game farm and buy pheasants for less than that. The Pa game commission is money hungry. The dead animals stay on the road for months and decay on the side of the road.
Linda, please reread my post...ya done yet? Ok as you now see I did call the DNR before touching it. And as for the warden not coming to the site to give me a tag for it...this law changed sometime between the '01 and '02 deer season. Wardens are now, NOT required to come to the site.
I assume this new law is trying to appeal to people who would normaly pick up road kill for what ever purpose, now there is no more one, two maybe four hour wait for them to come tag it. Also since the state cut out the carcus clean up crews they have nobody to pick these things up anymore. Just another reason why they made it easier for us to take, we're doing a job for them for free. So In sort I guess you could say I am up on current "Wisconsin" laws and as long as the person is in wisconsin they Will Not get in any legal trouble as long as they follow what I did.
Did you re-read my post yet? Ok now let's clear up a few things.I never said anything about waiting for someone to show up to write a tag...I also said you needed to call first. What you are talking about as far as picking up a tag pertains ONLY TO DEER! Anything else a warden will probably tell you to pick it up and he will then come to you to SELL you an Accountable Siezure Record or what is more commonly known in Wisconsin as a "Red Tag".There will be a fee charged and a warden WILL examine the speciman. You are also mistaken about the state no longer picking up road killed deer. It varies by county but it is still being done.Have you seen those blaze orange deer on some roadsides? They are marked that way by the state patrol for pick-up crews. Now while the Game Warden was here this morning reading your post he told me to make a few things clear to you. There have been NO changes in regulations regarding road killed animals in years. If YOU would like some clarification regarding current laws just e-mail me and I'm supposed to give you HIS phone number and he'll help clear up any misconceptions you may have.
Illegal. If you hit a deer you can call and get a tag for it but
that's it. And they want to see it and check out the vehicle that hit it as proof. Picking up anything dead is not a lawful way of obtaining game. Big fines!
