hi vicki,i seen apost below about you staple ,do you do the whole,seem? and what kind of staples do you use,im very curious,cuz i want to try it ,i have read inthe archieves over there,but no one seems to go into real,detail.i have only mounted 4 deer and i just cant seem to get right,they look good on the wall,but i know the mistakes, thanks tim

I staple the skin on the back of the form, where the wood is. On the seam, I always use a short incision and sew that. I also put a strip of plastic screen (called plastic canvas at hobby stores) along the seam and hold it down snug with T-pins to help hold any unruly hair down while the deer dries. Makes a nice, clean seam.
I've not tried stapling an incision. I wouldn't think it would look very good. I'm assuming you are starting at the antlers and sewing towards the back. Are you using a 'baseball' stitch? You always insert the needle from the flesh (not hair) side and come up, then across to the other side and come up from below, etc., back-and-forth. Pull them TIGHT or they will gap. Also, make sure you aren't using a mannikin with too big a neck for the cape. You want the cape to fit 'comfortably,' not too tight, not too loose. You shouldn't have to fight to pull the seam together. If so, it will look even worse after it dries and shrinks.
If you ever get a chance to attend your state taxidermy show, or Nationals, the World, Regionals, etc., DO IT. You will learn SO MUCH from attending seminars and come home totally inspired! Subscribe to the "Trade magazines" such as Breakthrough and Taxidermy Today. Excellent, a must have!
