I have a doe in the freezer I'm thinking of doing next. My question is can I get by measuring around the neck for my mannikin & slipping it over like a sock to eliminate sewing? Or should i dorsil cut it like doing a buck? THANKS--------DOUG-------

Slipping it over doesn't work (for me)

Doug, I have been skinning mostly does out, and have come to realize that it doesn't work. I make a straight line incision large enough to get the skull out. Hope this helps.

Relief cut

Doug,
This has been covered before, but you won't be able to simply pull the cape onto the form like a sock due to the fact that the circumference of the neck just below the angle of the jaw is so much narrower than tde angle around the base of the skull. I've done a few does and all you need to do is make a relief cut from the leather side starting at the "smart knob", or occiput, on the back of the skull between the earbutts, and going about seven inches or so. If you really hate sewing (and who doesn't), make a four-inch incision, test fit and while it's on the form, insert the scalpel blade inside the incision and extend the cut until it just goes over and the cape goes on. Also, be sure to allow for the earbutts you'll have to build into the cape before pulling it on.

THANK YOU'S
