1. Is it absolutely necessary to tumble a red fox? I currently have it salt drying. The skin is so thin that I would think it would tear very easily in the tumbler.
2. When I skinned my red fox there was no fat (except at the very rear and no flesh stuck on the skin. The skin was very transparent. Is this normal? It almost peeled of.

No it is not necessary to tumble the fox, but we have tumbled dozens and have never had a problem. I suppose if you put a fox in the tumbler with a black bear that is fully clawed you might not like the results! The abdominal area on reds is very thin, they also in general are not a very fatty animal. Fox are by far the easiest skinning canine.
