HELP... Flies everywhere

Submitted by wchare on 05/18/2003. ( wchare@socket.net ) 216.106.72.80

I have got a fly problem. No matter what I do to keep them out they find a way to get in. I am working in an older building so it is near impossible to keep them all out. I try to keep everything as clean as I can but what bothers me the most is they are always buzzing around me. It also looks bad when people come in. Now that they are in how can I get them out or kill them without spraying bug killer or spending hours chasing them around with a fly swatter?

wchare;
Apparently something is attracting them. Make sure your fleshing beams are clean good, if you use a fleshing beam. Is your wire wheel for fleshing birds all gunked up. Is there any fat, scrapes of meat from your fleshing wheel laying around. Is there clean trash bags used daily. Do you do fish? Make sure the table you use to skin fish is cleaned good.

I forgot, where is your trash located? If it's too close to your shop move it away.

Damp dark palces do, go to your local farm supply store and get Golden Malrin, you sprinkle it outside the shop and they eat it and die pretty quick. Are your freezers ok? At Tractor Supply they have several types of fly traps, the ones with clear plastic jugs on bottom work better for some reason. I use this stuff around my horse barn.

Thanks

Thanks for your help. I'll try getting some traps and Golden Marlin. As far as the trash and beams being clean, thats what I dont understand. I dont leave any thing laying around to attract them really. I clean everything when I am done for the day and keep the trash in sealed trash cans. The shop I work in is cool and close to cattle though, so I imagine I will just have to put up with them till it gets cold again. Thanks again for the info I'll try the traps and poison.

Automatic sprayer

I use a "Q-Mister" (automated sprayer, costs about $20 at farm & pet supply places) with the bug killer canister during the summer months. It pusts out a spray every 15 mins. (battery operated). Works pretty darn well, especially if you have a/c and the windows closed. Wouldn't think it would work quite as well with open windows with screens, but I'd think it would help. During the 'non-fly' times, I use a nice smelling freshener in it. (Them, actually, as I have one in the showroom and one in the work area.)

Don't let your pets (or kids) get into the Malrin. Toxic stuff. Fly strips are a non-toxic way to go, too.

Try showering more often like twice a year ,that might help. Lol.
I know they can be persistant and hard to control,looks like this summer they are doing their thing a lot ,and reproducing like crazy.
