I have searched the forums in regards to beaver tails and most say to go with artificial.Anyway I wandered what the drawbacks are when useing the real tail when mounting.I think I whould rather go with
the real but will it deteriate - shrivel - or something?
thanks!

they are right, if youstatr mess'n with the real one it will take extra time, and whenyou are done you will be luky if it still looks real. the artificial ones look perfect anyway and way less trouble.try the fake, and keep the real one and try to tan it see if you like the results.

I have mounted them both ways and teir are some good artificial tails available, but I prefer using the real tail. It takes more time to do but you can get them to look just as good. After tanning, I filled mine with critter clay so I could get the shape I want, then I stitched the underside, you could also use staples or glue on the seam. The tail may fade a little so you might have to air brush it lightly.with a dark brown. If I have the time I always try to use the real thing
