bear hide care

i recently went bear hunting in canada and shot a 250lb black bear. I came home and the hide is salted and in a cooler. does it need to be iced. or can i leave unitl tomorrow when i go to the taxi. thanks

I hope you don't have it in water

If you do you're already in very big trouble. Salting should never be done on a hide that's not already fleshed even though eastern Canada is notorious for it. Shake the salt off and roll it up. Then refrigerate it till the taxidermist can get it.

they salted it orignally in canada. your telling me to shake the salt off. it has not been in water, they said it was good for about two weekes in this condition. so unsalt and put in freezer.

But don't take their word for it. If that thing was salted without the paws being removed or the head being removed or the 40 pounds of fat I usually see on Eastern Canadian bear hides, it's a time bomb. Get it to you taxidermist TOMORROW. And talk to him about what actions you can take next time you go. Many hunters trust their outfitters to their very great sorrow on black bears, especially fall black bears when temps are high. Learn when to salt and when to avoid it. Then break your outfitters arm when he misuses it.
