Staining antlers

Submitted by Jim on 06/11/2003. ( ) 204.211.171.11

Please let me know if the procedure I've found for staining a repaired antler is correct.
Rebuild point with Quickwood or Apoxie Sculpt
Sand smooth
Paint repaired area with bone colored latex paint and allow to dry
Rub on walnut stain using pigments from the bottom of the can
Allow to dry slightly and buff stain off

Is there anything I left out? Also, should I apply any kind of finish to the whole rack? (Gloss, wax, etc.)
Thanks,
Jim

Potassium Permanganate

Jim:

I have had better success with this than wood stain. You can get it through some of the different taxidermy supply. You put it on in separate coats until the desired match is acquired. Lightly buff with steel wool for highlights. I always finish off with a very light coat of matte finish or something with light gloss, no need for high gloss shine. Good Luck!

Matte finish

Should I spray the matte finish on the whole rack or just the repaired area?

Whatever Blends Better

Jim:

Try the repaired area first. Do whatever you have to do to make the area blend. Natural antlers as you know don't have a lot of gloss, so just make it look natural. If it needs a little more gloss, then just mist some lightly on the whole rack to blend. Good Luck!
