I mounted a wt and its been drying for about a week. I stuck my finger in its ear to see how dry it was and it still felt moist and I noticed green mildew. Whats causeing this and how do I fix it. Also a fan has been on it for the week.... Thanks Fritz

Without knowing what you did as far as buts or if it is tanned or DP it is hard to be exact. If you used a water based paste, especially the powdered kind. and there is some in the buts. That is probably where the mold is coming from. But not to worry spray a bit of Lysol in them. that should do it. A dehumidifier will decrease chances of future mold.
I cleaned the butts down very good no meat at all, and used liq-tan and I didn't use paste on my face area,will this info help pin point it.thanks Fritz
Fritz, That's mold growing inside the ear canals- actually a common occurance during the drying process as any clay or ear butt material is holding moisture and creating a dandy environment for mold. High humidity in the shop also contributes to the slower drying of the ears. It's not something to be too alarmed about. Consider that a $200.00 pair leather boots will grow mold given a little dampness and warm temperature and certainly they were made from well tanned leather. Same with the deer head- nothing about the tanning process renders the cape unattractive to molds. Trust that the ears will dry, and once dry the mold won't like it there anymore. If it really bothers you you could apply a little alcohol to the canal with a small paint brush or use the lysol. I'll bet that as I type this there are maybe hundreds of gamehead mounts drying in shops growing a bit of mold down in the ears unnoticed by most of us. Enjoy, Aaron H.
