price comparisons between Van Dykes & WASCO

Submitted by Ken on 06/13/2003. ( ) 12.226.5.22

I have compared prices on similar products between WASCO and Van Dykes. ie: pickling crystals, salt, tanning oil...etc. Van Dykes seems to be much lower priced. Does anyone know why that might be?
Are WASCO products superior? Just starting out and want quality work. I do not mind spending more for a better product, if that's the case.

Shipping $

Kind of depends on where you live. The shipping charges alone could make a huge difference in total cost (as well as the time it takes to receive your order). As far as product superiority, I have not ordered enough from Van Dykes to know. I do know that I have always been satisfied with WASCO.

I noticed

I noticed that too. I also noticed that alot of their products are the exact same thing except for price. I figured it was because Van Dykes is owned by Cabelas and has more room to move on their prices. Maybe because they are such a big company they can afford to order more in bulk and get better prices and pass them on to the customer. Just my thinking though.

exact items

monday i got up a list of supplies i need and compared WASCO and McKenzie, after totaling it up there was only 30 cents difference.
excluding shipping which would be about the same from either supplier for me. Van Dykes didnt have an item i wanted so i excluded them from
the comparison. ........... mark

Definitely depends on where you live!

Van Dykes products are high quality, as far as I have experienced. But.. When trying to decide which supply company to order from, I always try to pick the one that is closest to me. Shipping charges can make a BIG difference. I usually order from McKenzie. Even though their prices are somewhat high, they're so close to me, that I recieve my order the NEXT DAY if I order by noon, and the shipping is cheaper. Van Dykes is in South Dakota and usually takes a whole week for an order to get to me, not to mention the high shipping. Once I ordered some stuff from them and about died when I found out the shipping charges.

My point is.. Usually, it's best to pick the company closest to you. Especially if you're ordering heavy stuff!

it depends

Are you including shipping costs to your comparison (foolish) or just comparing SAME items catolog prices? Most supply companies dont price there stuff according to what the other guys charge ( sound familiar, anyone?) They charge according to what a market will bear, or their overhead. Ken, its ok and normal to shop around. If the items ARE the same thing, like a brand name tool or common ingredient, then buy with the least cost. If you plan to just use one company (again, foolish) then youll wanna look at all the products to see prices. For instance, youll be buying the best paint choice using WASCO, regardless of prices. Bondo is bondo, so go with price. Forms are very different, so choose your quality first. See? Or go to VanDyke and look it up in THEIR forums...you read me? A few cents more here or there might be helping to pay WASCO for this most informative tool!

I feel Van Dyke chemicals are a little on the weak side

Van Dykes items are a little on the weak side. I use them just depends on where I am ordering from. They have upgraded some of thier forms and seem to be working on improving thier mannikin lines.

I do prefer WASCO's supplies chemicals, paints etc. Plus out of the goodness of thier heart provide this site for everyone to learn from or to bitch at someone on.
