preserving bird bones

I have these little baby bird carcasses - possibly pigeons - i wanted to preserve their skeletons - but with some of the skin - sort of like mumification - i set them out on the sun to dry up. Is there a better way of doing this? And are there any health risks to worry about? since they were probably baby pigeons.

The best way

The best way to accomplish what you are trying to do is to skin the birds and remove all meat and fat from the skin and bones. Then, rub borax onto the skin. Sew up the holes. Drying them in the sun will NOT preserve them, it will only make them rot.
