Hey,
Just wondering if becoming a taxidermist is as easy as filling out the appication and sending in your money...or are their any classes involved? Is there anywhere that you can go that will teach you the things that you need to know? We live in Durham, NC.

And click on schools and workshops. In some states to be a taxidermist it's as easy as sending the state a fee and they will send you the license needed to be one,BUT,now you have to become one, that is where the schools and worksops come in.Good luck. John
Here in North Carolina, all you "have" to do to be a licensed taxidermist is send a check for $10 and the application to the Wildlife Resources Comission. No education or experience required.
To learn taxidermy, I would recommend Montgomery Community College, if you are really serious. They offer both day and evening classes. Johnston community college offers some basic courses that are a good start. They usually meet 1 night per week from 7-10 for 8 weeks. They offer 4 classes: Big Game, Small Game, Birds, and Fish at $55 per class. I took the birds and small game classes and I learned the basics, but I still had to practice a lot. I think Montgomery goes alot more in-depth. If I can help you anymore, shoot me an email and I'll try to help. I live about 35 minutes from Durham.
Tonja, Another resorce to consider is Piedmont Community College in Roxboro. Each year they do a 3 day seminar called the Spring Mini Course. Here you can watch some tallented people do many types of taxidermy. It is one of the best deals around that I have ever seen for begginers and those with many years experience as well (we never stop learning). Also there are suppliers from all over and a competition. It's very close by to Durham so you really should check it out. Good luck, Aaron H.
